From May through October is turtle season here, where lights or objects are prohibited on the beach at night for the nesting mothers. Our beaches have the highest concentration of huge nesting sea turtles: Loggerhead, Green and Leatherback in all of North America. For thousands of years these prehistoric creatures come overnight to lay their clutch of eggs and hatchlings emerge a month or so later. The sea turtles are protected by the EPA, so no touching but you can watch and it is one of the most amazing mother nature’s event to witness. The Turtle Preservation Society and the Barrier Island Sanctuary are great places to go on turtle walks and learn about their special journey.
