May, 2018 Melbourne Beach’s annual event Founders Day will be taking place! Founded back in 1883 by Mayor Cyrus Graves, our town of Melbourne Beach has a lot of history. Each year on the first Saturday of May the town gets together to celebrate this momentous event. The day begins at 7:30am with the annual Two-Mile Bulldog Run beginning at Ryckman Park, right across the street from the Seaglass Inn! Following the run will be the 29th annual Pineapple Surf Contest down the road at Ocean Park beach. Other events include a Canoe and Kayak race, a Paddleboard race, and the fun spirited Captain Rufus Recycle Regatta, which challenges participants to build their own rafts using all recyclable and recycled materials. Also, the M.O.R.G.A.N. Project hosts the Turtle Splash race! Throughout the day participants can adopt rubber turtles which have numbers on the bottom. Then in the afternoon, the turtles are let loose into a course down the river and the owners of the first 10 turtles to cross the finish line earn awesome prizes! All money earned goes to the M.O.R.G.A.N. project, an organization designed to promote awareness and facilitate support of children with special health care needs and their families. You can visit www.turtlesplash.org for more information on the race.
Along with these great events there’s so much else to do! Local venders flock to Ryckman Park to show off their craft at the art fair. A car show features beautiful antique and classic cars. Other events include a hot dog eating contest, a talent show, food vendors, corn hole competitions, and fun activities for the kids! Then after dusk, Ocean Avenue shuts down for a fun street party featuring live bands and dancing! .
Visitors from all over Brevard flock to this family-friendly celebration each year. There is something for everyone to enjoy! The best part is that it’s located right outside the Seaglass Inn! So come spend a relaxing weekend away from home with us here at the Seaglass Inn while also getting to experience the fun filled Melbourne Beach tradition of Founders Day.
